First steps
- Move the car off the carriageway if you can. Bulgarian law requires this whenever it is possible.
- Switch on your hazard lights. They are an extra signal and do not replace the warning triangle.
- Put on a reflective vest before you step onto the road.
- Set out the warning triangle if the car cannot be moved.
- Wait somewhere safe, away from traffic. On a motorway or busy road, stand behind the barrier.
- Call for help. If anyone is hurt, call 112 first.
Where the warning triangle goes in Bulgaria
Under Article 97 of the Bulgarian Road Traffic Act, the triangle goes in the lane the car occupies, facing oncoming traffic, at least:
- 30 metres from the car;
- 100 metres on motorways and on roads with a speed limit above 90 km/h.
The emergency number
The emergency number in Bulgaria is 112, as in the rest of the EU. You can call it from any phone.

What to have ready
If you have breakdown cover or a hire car, check its conditions or call the provider first.
- the exact place or your Google Maps point;
- what happened and whether the car still moves;
- how many people are with you;
- where the car needs to go.
